After a hugely successful second Barnaby in June 2011, work is starting on next year’s Festival – there are just 9 months to plan a weekend long event with exhibitions, events and activities.

Anyone interested in finding out more about what’s involved in becoming a volunteer for BARNABY 2012 is invited to come along and meet some of the team at Snowgoose Cafe Bar on Wed

'Who wants macc to have chorlton/west didsbury status? we moved away from manchester partly for that reason - they'd started to become a little too smug for our liking, and that's precisely why macclesfield appealed to us as a young family. there is something entirely 'authentic' about the place. it doesn't pretend to be anything other than it is, thank goodness - the sum of its silky parts. but together we can make it so much more and be proud of it, treacle and barnaby leading the way...and it can be so much more than south manchester, trust me! 'I take on board everything that all of you have said,whether it be agreeing or contrary to how I thought then.Unfortunately my later post about the changes in Macc since I wrote that,haven't been added,so you won't know that I congratulated the organisers(one of which comes from near Blackheath,so agreed with my views a few months back when I spoke to her about it!) of Treacle & Barnaby for their efforts in 'giving' Macc what it needed-a heart/life/the buzz in the town at least once a month.The success of Treacle has meant they can't take on any more crafters/artists to sell on a stall.There have been some enormous changes with the introduction of new Bars/pubs/cafes & this has given choice.The general feel of Macc has been greatly improved.People have started to take an interest in HOW the town looks & are bringing back the character it obviously once had!Ok,so granted it won't be a 'Greenwich or Blackheath',but it has gone a long way into becoming a far more appealing place.It might not get to Chorlton/West Didsbury staus,but who knows,maybe people could make it develop into that.There are definately enough artistic/creative people here in Macc to transform it.I spoke out bluntly to get people's attention-but hopefully in a good way.This was my experience of macc! '

Food4MaccDirect

Launched in Macclesfield
Between November last year and early May 2011, Food4Macc Direct supplied 18 half lambs, 39 free range chickens, 38 loaves from a local artisan baker and 20 home made cakes. They also took advance orders for 9 quarter shares of outdoor reared pigs. All the produce was delivered either early evening at Waters Green Tavern or during the day at Age Concern, both convenient central Macclesfield locations Interested in being part of this? Now its your chance to join in.

Food4Macc Direct has been registered as a food business and is aiming to begin full operations in June, continuing with it's early producers, but then expanding the product range. Plans include establishing a vegetable scheme, expanding the choice of meat on offer and introducing other products , such as dairy items. For now, the plan is to continue with deliveries on a weekly or monthly basis to central Macclesfield locations, but eventually Food4Macc Direct wants to establish a more permanent food hub.


One of the key principles for Food4Macc Direct is that it helps reconnect people with where their food comes from, understanding and influencing how it is produced. It is also vital that value for the customer is not at the expense of the farmer or producer making a fair return. The Food4Macc Direct team works with farmers and producers to establish schemes that enable customers to get a high quality product at a great price.

Battle of the Bands

@Bollington Youth Fair Saturday June 11

Bollington Town Council is hosting a YOUTH FAIR on Saturday the 11 June  on the Atax Fieldnear the Community Centre Bollington.

 “Battle of the Bands”. There will be a competition for  aspiring bands and other music makers for a £200 prize in the form of tickets to a GIG of their choice. A Stage(s) and electrical power will be provided.

Also a Fashion Show Competition for the most glamorous outfit made from recycled clothes obtained for the Bridgend Centre Palmerston Street Bollington. Prizes of £25, £15 and £10 will be offered to the winners.

Brand new Macc

The loop will be in the Market place this weekend, well Saturday 11am to be precise to watch David Rutley bounce down the front of the Town Hall. Yes really! You can have a go too if you'd like, for a donation of £20 to MAST.Abseilers can register with Fiona Seddon on 07789 652652. (Over 16s only).
If you have a head for heights there will be a climbing wall also and face painting (low level) and community stalls too. Crucially oit will be a chance to set eyes on the glorious new brand for Macclesfield. Make sure you go and take a look.

The new brand will be shown off at The Beer Festival on Friday night from 7.30pm (live music from Dazed and Confused and Monkey Harris) and at the Mayors Charity football match at the Moss Rose on Sunday at 2pm when The Mercian Regiment take on The Soap Allstars ( Corrie, Emmerdale & HollyOaks) in aid of The Army Benevolent Fund.

Treacle with eggs

A natural combination this weeked at least!

The Treacle Market falls on Easter day so alongside bumper stalls of glorious food and drink there will be Story telling in a gorgeous tent from the Just So Story tellers ( buy ickets for the festival too), a crazy egg race and egg rolling too ( organised by the Rotary Club) and great music all day from The Maddocks, Ian Haigh and Irish folk from The Hacklers.

If cocolate eggs are too childish for you, try a chocolate cup of home made fruit liqueur. Yes really! 

Bring a big basket, a sun hat, your dogs and children ( optional ) for a very special Treacle day.

Easter bonnets optional.

Public Artist, Cheshire East Council

Cheshire East Council's Strategic Commissioning Unit for Cultural Services wishes to appoint a public artist as part of an entrance re-development project at Nantwich Pool.  The contract will require vinyl applied window treatments as well as interior wall artwork inspired by local heritage, with community consultation and workshops.

Public exhibition and interviews of shortlisted artists will be held at Nantwich Pool on Saturday 14 May.

Puppet workshop today

Puppet Workshops

Giant Puppets of Macclesfield's Treacletown Twelve are going to be striding along with the Parade. Our Parade artist Jacki Clark is running a second workshop at our new premises on  Saturday 16^th April 1.30- 5pm. 

Come along to work with Jacki, find out how to make the structure yourself – it can be collapsed to make it easily portable – and learn the techniques to add features and clothing according to the era that you are working with. The same techniques can be used to make smaller puppets too!

Our Barnaby Parade Workshops is on South Park Road (the old driving test centre). This has been loaned to us by Resources for Business. The address is

If you turn by the Co Op chemists on Park Lane, the building is on your right, opposite the old St John's School building, access to the workshop is round the side through large double doors, there will be an Easel outside with the Barnaby Logo.

After the talk and question & answer session, there will be a chance for you to put forward any suggestions you may have about Food4Macc projects.

Don't forget to take along any seeds, seedlings or produce etc you have for swapping, including egg boxes, empty jam jars etc.

Jo Bell is a poet and literature development worker, whose projects take her across the UK. Formerly an industrial archaeologist, she lives on a narrowboat in the NW of England. Her latest publication Bugged brings together writers such as Stuart Maconie, Ian Marchant and Jenn Ashworth, in a collection of work based on overhearings.
