Gig Review. Vavoom

Review; Vavoom, Saturday 14th August, Swan with Two Necks

Everyone lucky enough to catch Vavoom on Saturday night at a packed Swan were treated to a real old-fashioned rockabilly riot. Those hepcats ripped into their show with the gusto of a wheel spinning dragster. The band played a mix of original rockabilly greats by the likes of Johnny Burnette and Gene Vincent, threw in a few Stray Cats numbers, and added a dash of the Ramones. Shook it all up, and let it loose on a willing crowd. And the gig was as much about the way the songs were played, as it was about the songs themselves. The band are a classic 3 piece. Booty on Gretsch guitar and vocals, Vince Viper on drums – resplendent in 2 inch fire red creepers, and Chris Large – playing some of the finest slap double bass this side of 1957. Every one of their songs was attacked from the off. Whether Chris was climbing all over his double bass or Vince was firing off drum roll volleys, the energy never let up.

Next time these cats swing through Macc, make sure you’re quiffed up and ready to rock, because based on Saturday’s performance, Vavoom will not leave you disappointed.
