Time for Treacle

.

Its the last Sunday of the month so there's a Treacle Market in town. Bring a big basket ( there will be pumpkins!) for gorgeous seasonal and local edible goodies including old fashioned Treacle toffee and Pumpkin brittle. Mmm.. Theres loads of free things for children to do, apple bobbing, spooky decorations, creative whittling with Wacky Woods... Come and listen to Annies Saints and Sinners, (trad jazz) and Glass Ankle's acoustic set . Go to http://glassankle.bigcartel.com
for a preview.

We are really pleased that many local shops will be opening this Sunday too. So take advantage of free parking and enjoy a days shopping in Macc.

Meanwhile in the Market Place: antiques, vintage homewares, jewellery, textiles, photography and antiquarian books. If it's the unusual or different you seek....

Go to www.treaclemacclesfield.co.uk to see what's going on.

Craftworks Project - Artist, Library Theatre Company

Call Our for Young Artists

"Craftworks" is an exciting new community arts project that they will be developing over the coming months. It will investigate the role of craftsmanship in 21st century communities and will culminate in a sharing of work in March 2011.

As a key part of the project they are looking for 5 young artists (aged 18 - 30) to become creative researchers in local communities. These researchers will meet local people to investigate -
Local industries that used to exist and how people were involved in them.
Crafts that people are able to do that may be special or unusual.
Crafts and skills that used to exist that are now dying out.

Participating artists will be supported to make this investigative journey in a way that reflects their own practice. In exchange they will devise a creative way to share their experiences at an informal event in March 2011.

Closes Friday 12 November 2010 Paid (£10k-15k pro rata) Part time Contact: Liz Postlethwaite l.postlethwaite@manchester.gov.uk

Vagina Monologues

The auditions for the 2011 benefit production of The Vagina Monologues are starting again. They're open auditions, so any interested women should just go along. No acting experience is required - they're not looking for actresses or amateur dramatic types as much as for women who want to do something different for charity; who have suffered or are close to someone who has suffered from domestic abuse; who came to a performance this year and wanted to be a part of V-Day or simply want to challenge themselves with a unique experience.

The auditions are pretty informal and interested parties don't need to bring anything other than themselves (and possibly a friend for moral support or to stop them chickening out!). More info is on their website
www.vdaymacclesfield.co.uk.

If you're considering it but fancy finding out a bit more from some of the women who actually took part this year, join their Facebook group (search 'V-Day Macclesfield' or use the link on their site) and they'll be happy to share their experiences.

A few words from Craig at Biddulph Up in Arms:

"Come along next Wednesday and celebrate Roy Bailey's 75th birthday in the company of two of his best friends. Roy, dubbed by Tony Benn ''the finest socialist folksinger if his generation'' has lost none of his vim and vigour as his last two cds, 'Sit Down and Sing' and 'Below the Radar' will testify. He will be reunited with squeezebox king John Kirkpatrick who has played with just about everybody (Steeleye Span, Richard Thompson, Martin Carthy in Brass Monkey etc) over an illustrious career spanning four decades.

To complete the line up support comes from the Scottish-American David Ferrard; a fellow-activist whom Roy on his recent sleevenotes as a ''singer-songwriter of quality'', covering two of his songs. He switches effortlessly between the English and American folk genres and was a big hit at the 2009 Shrewsbury Folk Festival."

world class Jazz in Macc. Now booking

One of the greatest ever jazz tenor saxophonists Jerry
Bergonzi is to
perform a special concert at the King's School.

Formerly a member of the Dave Brubeck Five, during a career spanning more than four decades, Jerry has performed in the world's top venues including:
Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, The Royal Festival Hall, Alexandra
Palace, The Lincoln Centre and the Hollywood Bowl as well as the renowned
Monterey and Nice jazz festivals. Now it's Macc's turn.

Jerry is the inaugural headliner in a new series of special concerts, promoted by former pupil and jazz composer Steve Plews and local impresario Steve Darlington.

Steve Plews said: "This is an amazing coup for the local music scene. Jerry is truly a world great. Indeed, when Michael Brecker was asked what it was like to be the world's greatest living saxophonist, he simply replied ?I don't know - ask Jerry Bergonzi.'

Steve added: 'Jerry's playing is characterised by relentless drive, inner fire, total command, awesome technique, elastic lyricism and rich resonance. He is a world-class musical visionary and will be one of the most influential and talented musicians ever to perform in Macclesfield."

Get local

Fact. There is nothing more enticing than a stuffed crocodile behind the counter of a shop. Thats not the staff but a delightful quirk of Hadfields which proclaims itself as a ' dry Salter' but is in fact a glory hole of all things hardware, garden and more. This very old Macc family business has upped sticks a few times from its original period building (now Fat Face) and is hidden from view near the entrance to the multi storey on Churchill Way. A group of handsome bulbous green glass jars a reminder of its trading style 150 years ago.We went in tentatively to buy rather odd things and amazingly came out with all of them. Candle wicks, home brew equipment, garden trugs, weed killer, incense....all under the watchful eye of the croc. Oh and a stuffed crow too....this is the very antithesis of clone town shopping and needs our full support. Won't get our firelighters anywhere else from now on.

Silk FM has launched its annual
local Hero awards again and needs your nominations:

Something for the weekend ?

We made it to the preview of the Art of Caring at Macc Town Hall last night. The great and the good were there, being coaxed to dig deep and buy art to support East Cheshire Hospice. Its a pressing cause and also a big reminder of the wealth of creative talent in the area. Make sure you get to this biennial exhibition, there is such a diverse selection of work so most tastes should find something. We're not big on sheep ourselves, but there are plenty there, plus still lives, seacsapes and a range of glorious landscaspes from Dean Entwistle & Colin Halliday but our favourites were Jo Deas' vibrant textured abstracts (see above) and Ralph McGaul's commanding figures....get along and decide for yourself. Its open til 9pm tonight and Tuesday.

We will be excitedly getting along to one of the 3 Big Draw events taking place in East Cheshire on Satuday. It is great that CEC has atalst embraced this national Drawing Campaign and we can't wait to see what it will comprise of.

You can catch the last night ( and a matinee too) of Oklahoma on the 9th at MADS if you like a bit of Rogers and Hammerstein or if not
catch The Magic Otters at Ronnie's on the 10th.

A word from Biddulph

'Back to back shows, as last Wednesday's theme of fine female voices enhanced by fabulous playing continues into THIS October. Husband and wife team MEGSON return to The Biddulph Arms with their profile steadily on the rise after several Folk Awards nominations and numerous festival appearances. Incredibly already promoting their fourth cd 'The Longshot'; comprising another collection of cameos from an industrial North with the title track highlighting the highs and lows of following your local football team. All of which sounded very impressive when I saw them in Leicester over the Summer. And talking of 'impressive', support comes from Shropshire trio FLAXENBY with again, superb guitar/mandolin and fiddle topped by one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.'

Bald

An exhibition by sculptor Jean Parker

A body of work that was made as a reflection upon a period of illness and medical treatments without being overtly literal or mawkish. The choices she has made in creating this work underline her integrity as a sculptor and the importance of this in her life.

The major part of the exhibition is made up of a group of large alabaster heads. '

'The boldness of strength, with which these larger pieces have been carved, relates back to some of the earlier work of Jacob Epstein. The blank, white face has similarities to the work of the contemporary British sculptor Stephen Cox who was greatly inspired by Indian sculpture.'
