Wild and young

Pure radios have teamed up with the RSPB Wildlife Explorers, Fun Kids and Reading for Life to launch the WildVerse poetry competition. Write a poem on any wildlife subject you like and your poem could be read out on Fun Kids, a radio station that’s for you, not your parents.

And what’s more, the winner gets a really cool PURE Sensia and the four runners-up an EVOKE Flow internet-connected digital radio so you and your friends can listen to your poem on the radio!

Children and young people “aged up to 19” are invited to submit their ‘wild poems’ which can be about a bug, a bird, a tree or any kind of wildlife, and the winning entries will be read out on Fun Kids between the 18th and 31st of October 2010.

Blue Funk

A word from Garry....
'The future of the Blues? Very possibly. Another alarmingly young (17yrs) lad with a huge talent on guitar, fronting his own band of veteran players who can barely keep pace!! I just adore this huge groundswell of young raw talent that is keeping the blues alive. This kid is playing half the venues/festivals on the planet this year.
Support is from the Alex Mckown Band. Remember the first time Bernie Marsden played for Bluefunk at the British Legion. Well I used a trio called Inside to support him. A trio comprising 2x 11yr olds and a 10 yr old. Everyone thought I’d gone out of my mind including Bernie...... and then they blew us all away!!! including Bernie. Alex is now 13yrs old fronts his own blues band and is a veteran of several major blues festivals (Colne x3) Think I got that one right? Aah....to be young again.'

Tickets £8 from Garry on garrywhite10@yahoo.co.uk or 07818884324

Something For The Weekend

The Just So Festival is most on our minds this weekend and the only way to understand the absolute wonder of it all is to visit: http://www.justsofestival.org.uk/whats-on .

There's a real beach in the woods (with buckets and spades); face painting in the magical bespangle hazel-wood circle; indie-rock from the Scaremongers. There's lantern making and a fairy queen trail and circus skills and a cinema and... just so much more!!!

Bring all your dressing up and just love being a child again - whatever age you are!

Please remember that there will be NO tickets available on the gate - they must be purchased on-line in advance for both Saturday and Sunday.

See you there!!!

A Spontaneous Outburst of Art

The Intention was to tell of Astro Kid's Day tomorrow at Jodrell Bank but as always you have to move at cosmic speed to get a ticket and we're sorry to say it's sold out.

But... how exciting, a spontaneous outburst of art and at the top of White Nancy, Bollington. James Wood is exhibiting a small installation piece that will put focus on the landscape, this Friday (20 August) between noon and 3pm. Take a look at his work on the blog: jameswood10@blogspot.com and get yourself along...

Homegrown Reggae

Macclesfield & Reggae. Not words that you hear in the same sentence very often.Til now.

A slice of the Manchester Reggae scene comes to Macc when Homegrown Effect play
The Townhouse on Saturday 7th August.

Greg Jackson plays bass guitar, whistle, kazoo and sings backing vocals. Stu Baggaley (bassist in Glass Ankle) is the main songwriter and plays rhythm guitar, Melodica and sings main vocals. On drums, Alan Redfearn, lead guitar Tom Jackson and percussion Dan Seddon.

Live and on record they make use of delay and reverb, creating a rootsy, atmospheric dub sound reminiscent of King Tubby's production style during the 70's. Fingers crossed, they are some times joined by a Saxophonist and Trumpet player but are not sure if he can make it yet or not! Support this gig if we want more reggae in town.

Monday 2 August 2010

Harry Sidebottom at Macc Library

The Library has pulled out all the stops to bring Harry Sidebottom, historian; best-selling author of the Warriors of Rome series; and presenter of the History Channels, Ancient Discoveries, in to Macclesfield to talk about his work. It is a brilliant coup and if we want more author visits and a dynamic programme of events in our library it has to be well supported. Don't miss it on Wednesday at 2pm or even better buy your ticket in advance for just £2 (including refreshments).

Praise for Harry: 'Sidebottom's prose blazes with searing scholarship' The Times. 'Gladiator - style battle scenes and well researched details - not to mention religious zealots hell bent on destroying the Roman Empire - not even Gladiator had that' Shortlist.
