Jiving is the thing to be doing right now and there might be a very good reason to get in training ....can't wait to see the Barnaby festival Brochure (out soon).

French fancies

“Club Franco-Britannique de Macclesfield”, (Macclesfield’s French Club), is holding an evening of Chatting, coffee and home-made cakes on Tue 23rd March at 8pm at the Heritage Centre. People are invited to bring along a French poem or a few lines from a favourite book or a song on a cassette or CD to present to the group.

They are a friendly, non-intimidating group of people of various ages who come together once a month to enjoy the French language and culture. Although the idea is to speak in French, they welcome people of all levels and they do not force people to speak in French or “put them on the spot”, so don’t worry if you think your French is not good enough, Go along and give it a go, a mouthful of crumbs will make your accent sound more authentic!

Whilst were on a garden theme...

Young conservation scientists from the Macclesfield RSPB Wildlife Explorers Phoenix Group joined Jonathan Taylor of OPAL(Open Air Laboratories) Northwest to complete an earthworm and soil survey at Lindow Common.

Group Leader Tina Hanak said, “Our work today contributes to a national survey that hopes to gather information on earthworm populations across the country. Earthworms are sensitive to lots of environmental factors - hopefully the results will provide information on whether different species of earthworm prefer different soil types.”

There are 26 species of earthworm, 12 of which are widespread, in the UK. Specimens identified as part of the survey at Lindow Common included the Lob worm (our largest British earthworm) and the Blackheaded worm.

To get involved and complete an earthworm and soil survey of your own visit the OPAL website www.opalexplorenature.org.

For more information about Macclesfield RSPB Wildlife Explorers please contact Tina Hanak on 07870 804413 or by e-mail wex@macclesfieldrspb.org.uk.

Need a garden? Get growing...

A great initiative by food4macc to help people without gardens or allotments to make use of other peoples gardens that they can't manage themselves. I've seen at first hand how brilliantly this can work; and everyone benefits.

Gardens Offered @ 13 March 2010:

Higher HurdsfieldA sloping area approximately 3m x 7m, which has been used for shrubs. The owners started to clear the area in order to grow veg, but found they did not have the time nor expertise.

They are looking for someone to garden on weekdays, preferably with experience.

Bollington (off Ovenhouse Lane near the Leisure Centre) The garden is approx 6m x 11m, described as “a mess” by the owner. Gardening times by negotiation.

Brookfield Lane (near Co-op on Buxton Road)Two areas approx 3.5m x 3.5m and 6m x 4m PLUS a big greenhouse. Cultivated by the owner for veg for the first time last year with limited success, but great potential. Access currently only when owner is at work on Mondays and Wednesdays

Macclesfield Road, Alderley Edge The garden is 1.3 acres, the plot has been used for veg in the past but is now rough grass.

Keystone cops anybody?

A word from AWAOS:
'Curvy ladies and energetic men required. Now how often do you hear that?
Alderley and Wilmslow Amateur Operatic Society, who are currently in rehearsal for their annual Spring concert "Got to sing, got to dance" will be staging the musical Mack and Mabel in November at the Evans Theatre Wilmslow. Mack and Mabel is the story of the tumultuous relationship between Hollywood director Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand who became one of his biggest stars.
The Society have drawn together an extremely experienced production team and this promises to be a fun packed event with opportunities for ladies who aspire to be bathing beauties or men who think they might enjoy the rough and tumble of being a Keystone Cop.
For information on joining the Society in any capacity, front stage or back stage please contact Anne Hallworth at ahallworth@talktalk.net The group are also looking for a wardrobe mistress, a role that would ideally suit someone with an interest in costume/fashion.
Better still, come along and see the group in person when "Got to sing, got to dance" hits the stage at the Woodford Community Hall from the 22nd to 27th March. The show features songs and dance numbers from many well known musical favourites, showcasing the group's multi talented membership.

Photography competition

MACCLESFIELD: A NEW VIEW

This is a new photography competition, open to all.

THE IMAGE:

Do you have a favourite view of Macclesfield, somewhere you stand and enjoy? Perhaps you were born here, and there’s a particular building or street that just feels like home? Or maybe you’ve moved here recently and discovered something special?

Whatever it is, they want to see your ‘new view’ of Macclesfield - it could be a landscape, a building or object, a person or a group of people – the only thing they ask is that there must be some connection with the town and its location.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to showcase local talent and creativity”, says photographer and New View coordinator, Alex Wright of teneight studios “Each photograph will reflect a different perspective and allow us to see the town through someone else’s eyes. And because it’s open to everyone – professionals and non-professionals, adults and children alike – we should see some really interesting and diverse images.”

Your photograph can be a traditional view or something more avant garde – look through magazines, go online, take inspiration from your favourite photographer – but whatever you do have fun shooting a ‘new view’ of Macclesfield.

Closing date for entries: Midnight on Friday 7 May 2010

Go to www.barnabyfestival.org.uk for details of prizes and how to enter.
