Heaven Scent

'Say it with Flowers'
A tribute by local historian Dorothy Bentley Smith to those incredible adventurers who brought back to England flora, which now give such pleasure in our gardens.
Surprisingly two of the most important botanists had Macclesfield connections, and one local family more than any other encouraged the introduction of tropical plants to the town and neighbourhood.

Be part of something Big. Very Big

Once the preserve of elderly ladies we all know knitting is now the coolest thing there is. With at least two knitting groups in town (see loop listings ) there is now another way to hook up with other knitters. Local artist Jean Westbrook is creating the worlds largest cardigan and is very keen to have your knitted contributions.

So please join in and help Jean with a knitted or crocheted square (or as many as you can knit) 30cms/12inches. Any Colour. Any Pattern. Any Ply.

Then let her know when you have squares for her to sew together.

If she can galvanise enough knitters she hopes to beat China’s record

when the cardigan is measured by the Guiness book of records. You’ll be able to see the finished ‘garment’ over the Barnaby weekend in June.

Silk demise

The loop has recieved this urgent communique from Macclesfield Guild & Chamber of Trade. :

'I expect you read the article in Express. We are pressing Cheshire East to "think again" about the consequences of their unwillingness to support the Silk Musem with funds (our Council Tax). If Cheshire East Council cannot be persuaded to give their financial support all the plans and funds promised by the Northern Development Agency to expand, will be lost forever. The Director will lose his post along with 10 others. The Museum would close and our Silk Heritage collection dispersed.'

Do you feel strongly about this? Now is the time to write to your local councillor and let your feelings be known.

‘The Lion In Winter’ a period drama by James Goldman

King Henry II is in the winter of his life, and he holds a family reunion where he hopes to name his successor. The reunion includes his three sons: Richard, the handsome warrior later hailed as ‘The Lionheart’; John, the spoilt child who is Henry’s favourite; and Geoffrey, the middle child, clever but bitter. Henry’s estranged queen, Eleanor, has leave from prison to witness the occasion. Beautiful, passionate and commanding, Eleanor plots against Henry yet remains intensely in love with him. Also present is Henry’s mistress Alais, and her brother Philip, King of France, who is pursuing his own intrigues with the Plantagenet family.

The fate of England is at stake as its ruling family scheme, betray, deceive and conspire to get what they want. Sibling rivalry, violent jealousy and a desperate struggle for power and love are played out in an international political arena.

It's Official, Music is Power!

There's one thing for certain - it's all going on at Ronnie's Bar this Easter weekend. But first, a mention of Audiopimps, playing live at Fresh, Wood St., on Good Friday night; and back to Duke's Court...

Sunday (4 April) sees Ronnie play host to Music Is Power 2010, (pic courtesy of Youth Music) a charity event featuring some of the best bands and artists from Cheshire and Greater Manchester, from folk to indie and right on to hard rock. With a line up that includes Tom & Ferg, Chris Birdsall, Rich House, Supernought, Old Yellow and Mars Black. From 2pm to late at a ticket price of £10.

It's all in aid of Youth Music charity, a cause that helps improve the lives of disadvantaged young people by providing free access to a range of music-making projects and activities.

Since 1999, Youth Music has helped transform the lives of over 2 million children and young people through the power of music and because of the charity there ar now more high quality music-making opportunities for a wider range of children and young people than ever before; from learning rock guitar or beat-boxing to classical violin and everything in between.

The festival aims to raise funds for this cause and raise awareness of the organisation and of the positive and often life-changing effects music can have for young people.

For more information on the charity or to make a donation, go to http://www.musicispower.youthmusic.org.uk/

Oh yeah! and on Monday night the Virgin Marys play in the courtyard too - just has to be the place to be. See you there.
